The Rain

I watch the rain fall
like debris from the sky
illuminated in the lights
of buildings on Second Avenue
and I wonder
as I listen
to the crashing thunder
if it’s some of the last
thunder we’ll ever hear
and I step forward
into the rain
tasting it
letting it
soak my body and soul
as the wind blows
hard and true
